Apart from daytime fatigue, few people are aware of the fact that they suffer from sleep apnea. Usually, someone else will point out that they snore loudly and gasp for air. As such, a diagnosis can be quite traumatic.

Medical treatments for sleep apnea include:

  • Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure (CPAP)
  • Breathing devices
  • Dental devices

Implants and surgery should only be considered in selected cases.

CPAP machines are used with breathing masks and suitable for treating moderate to severe sleep apnea. Some masks fit snugly over the nose, while cover the nose and/ or mouth. The machine supplies continuously or intermittently flowing pressurized air into the throat, thus preventing the airway from collapsing.

Oral appliances treat the snoring aspect of sleep apnea. Similar to a sports mouth guard, the mandibular device or other wisely known as oral appliance pulls the lower jaw forward ever so slightly to keep the airway open, preventing the muscles and tongue from collapsing backwards into the throat.

The specific sleep apnea treatment will depend on the cause. Some of these lifestyle changes that might benefit you, include:

  • Avoid alcohol and sedatives before bedtime to prevent the throat muscles from relaxing too much.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight (BMI of less than 25). Losing a small amount of weight can improve your sleep apnea symptoms.
  • Sleep on your side with your head propped up.
  • Avoid heavy meals two hours before bedtime.
  • Don't drink coffee or energy drinks before bedtime.
  • Quit smoking to reduce fluid retention and inflammation in the upper airway and throat.
  • If you have constant sinus problems, use breathing strips, saline spray, or a nasal dilator to open your nasal passages before you go to bed and/ or before you use your CPAP machine. Alternatively consult with your healthcare practitioner.
  • Maintaining a regular sleep schedule and getting plenty of sleep will improve your health status and overall wellbeing.
